Haven't been by in awhile - but still an oud man!

Enjoying Oud Al Kaabah (Ensar) today - this is a cultivated oil released a few years ago around the time of Oud Yaqoub and Oud Yusuf.. It has aged wonderfully and I'm appreciated a very ripe quality - smells like the wood was soaked until just before the barnyard notes would be imbued - there's just this hint of barn to the Thai/Cambodi type profile.. Initially this was not one of my favorite EO oils but my appreciation has grown..

Yesterday - Santal Royale (Ensar) - fabulous sandalwood oil, one of the finest I've smelled, with a vibrant fresh tree quality coupled with an earthy/musky/spicy quality.. The complexity on this one makes it as interesting to study as a fine oud - usually sandalwood oils are really pleasant and beautiful to smell but can also be sort of simple and uninteresting after a few sniffs - not this one.. Those who have this in their collection are fortunate indeed..

Picked up some of his 80's Mysore sandalwood also - top shelf goodness here, sweet and rich.. Top-shelf Sandalwood on the electric heater can rival agarwood for aromatic intensity and enjoyment, and has a user-friendly quality that makes it the sort of thing that non-incense appreciating houseguests (here in the USA where basically no one knows about agarwood and Japanese style incense) can readily enjoy.. I've had some friends not really like what was very fine agarwood on the electric heater, but the sandalwood is always a hit..

Sultan Suleyman (Ensar) - it's hard to pick which of this top-shelf New Guinea distillations are my favorite, but this one competes for sure.. The Malaysian influence here is wonderful - imagine a hint of something along the lines of Purple Kinam teasing you amidst the epic, wild blue-green jungle aroma of the New Guinea agarwood.. An extravagant perfume..
good to have you back josh.

i like santal royale quite a bit too. santal sultan and laosan even more so though!

Suley these days is THE ONE for me. i love the PK tease and the malay notes. so many great sultans and i don't have ahmet anymore to compare, but Suley is right up there. today though i wear sultan abdul hamit:
for fans of resin packed agarwood on high heat, that smoldering, bubbling goodness. for fans of duhl q and aroha.

abdul hamit is one delicious concoction smelling like skewers of exotic tropical fruits, laced with nectars and honey of equally exotic flowers and spiced with dustings of finest cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, roasted over open fire.

Good to see ya Rasoul!

I have a .25ml v-vial of Laosan 1999 but I've never tried Sultan Santal - would have liked to get perhaps a full bottle of each if available. The Laosan 1999 is awesome - not sure if I like that or Santal Royale better, I haven't explored each enough to know..

Sultan Mustafa - seeing this one on Ensar's site while perusing the other delectables inspired me to wear some today - this one and Sultan Ahmet have a lot in common, they are, from my understanding, the same batches and ratios of woods but one in copper and one in steel - somehow I thought that the Sultan Mustafa was distilled in copper and the Ahmet in steel - but on Ensar's site is says the opposite, with Ahmet being the copper distillation.. Anyhow, I acquired both of these ouds at the same time, I want to say a couple years back, and I've always liked Sultan Mustafa better than Sultan Ahmet - Mustafa has this red quality, maybe a ripe cherry or something going on that is just delightful.. Such a complete oud and so incredibly saturated with scent notes..

excellent. glad to hear i am not the only one seeing the brilliance of the laosan.
never had enough of Ahmet to try multiple times but going off memory i saw more similarities than differences between the two. wish i had both to study further and get back to you on...

The Pursat select was great. I would be very happy with that as a daily wear.

Speaking of daily wears, today is my last sample, Mardelong. This is a Thai oil I can get down with. Nice depth to it.

excellent. there is definitely a quality to taha's oils that make them great daily wears and easy to appreciate, a dare I say western sensibility to it. i look forward to sample mardelong soon.

RG, aka royal guallam, aka RPG (royal "proper" Guallam) is what came out to play after lunch. was feeling sluggish after a hokkaido style ramen lunch, was debating a nap or more coffee and then i remembered i had RPG on me. one swipe and baaaam, i am wired!

while nha trang ltd is a very red scent from the beginning to the very end, RG starts red, then transitions to yellow sunshine and goes green. to my nose that is. this transition takes 30-45 minutes. there is strong medicinal notes, cast iron like mineral/metalic note (doesnt sound appealing but it really is spectacular actually), and of course there is that mostly bitter mildly sweet classic vietnam accord.

super satisfying.

When I bought a sample of Papuamantan before the holidays, our dearest Adam Coburn told me that Port Papua was the oft-overlooked Papuan release between the two.

HE IS SOOO RIGHT. yes, all caps necessary.

First swipe of Port Papua, I’m ALLLL in.
Recipe on how to make Port Papua: take Green Papua, Kinamantan and Archinam and mix in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Sprinkle a dash of AMAZINGNESS. Enjoy.

two very very different oils. i totally see that kinamantan reference. i will throw midori there too. and goign off memory archinam as well. there is overall what i like to call a feminine (not in scent but in texture of the scent) quality to port papua i like a lot. an easy wear and a crowd pleaser. elegant oil.

started the morning with few different sultan pasha attars i had received from a good friend a while back. they didnt speak to me then, they still dont speak to me now. i guess i am just not an attar guy and better accept that. the oils where iris noir, aurum, encens chypre, tabac.

albeit i find my own action disrespectful to mother nature and the artist, after an hour i had to wash off scrub and press reset button with oud. sorry sultan. its not you, its me!

the oud to get things going is a tried and true and a loved one: of course i am talking about green papua. all is well again :)
