Malas are a great way to keep track of your mantras. Both Hindus and Buddhists use these bead counters to keep track of how many times a mantra has been said. I have an 108 bead mala that I use on Thursdays per my jyotish's (vedic astrologer) direction. I have been thinking of getting an agarwood mala and was wondering if anyone owns one and if so where they got it and what their thoughts are on it. I know that chinese carvers are in large part responsible for the insane destruction of the wild oud market in SE Asia but I have seen what appear to be very nice malas from Indonesia and was looking for any input.

You should contact the gentleman at UNS Fine craft and coordinate with him to the grade and type of Agarwood. I understand that he's an excellent craftsman. I understand also that it is not easy working with Agarwood because the consistency of it is not hard enough and the density varies. Also beware that there are a lot of so-called Oud wood beads out there and that wood is very fragrant without warming or lighting up (unlike real Oud wood) but I am told it is not Agarwood but some scrupulosity vendors sell it as such. One good idea is if you have the wood and then you can have them carve the beads from it so that way you know what you're getting.

Thank you masstika. It's sad we have to watch our backs at every moment when we are searching for beauty and G-d's gifts that bring light into the world. I will contact the gentleman from UNS. The mala I seek is essentially a Tasbih with nine more beads. I am not a Hindu but a devout student of the science of astrology which to my understanding is haram in the Moslem faith. I mean no offense to my Muslim brothers by making such an enquiry here.

You just have to be careful especially since most of our dealings is over the net and not in person so beside developing personal relationship with vendors one has to ask a lot of questions. I don't think they'll mind your inquiry because I know that they used to sell Malas as well. There is nothing that is haram in the beads themselves in the faith except for the practice of Astrology as it pertains to fortune telling or future events predictions.
