blending oud

#1
Hi all,

I have a question.

Say I have a cheap but pure oud oil and an expensive good quality oil. Both are the same type. If I wanted to slightly upgrade the cheaper oil and mixed one or two drops of the good oil in it and let it sit would the oil aroma improve or would it not make any difference.

Also how does one 'sun or lamp' an oil and for how long e.g days or months, hours per day

thanks

Hassan, why not invest in pure Oud oil that does not require mixing or force-aging in order to yield quality? That would be my first response.

My intuition tells me not to mix the oils. If you have an "expensive good quality oil", then I wouldn't mix it with an inferior oil. Of course, you would try it on your wrist and see what happens. You could also just do a little bit in a sample vial and see what happens, instead of taking the risk.

Say for example I put a drop or two of a very sweet cambodi oil into a very barnyard nor not so barnyard hindi. Mixed it and let it sit for a while. I can only guess that it would give it a very subtle sweetness that could possibly be detected in the drydown or middle. Do you think it would improve the smell given that the hindi is mid range and not high end. The reason I ask this is I cannot afford expensive oils at present. Do you think it would spoil the oil over all?

Hassan, blending two oils doesn't mean that you'll get the best of both in one. Blending is a fine art - one I'm no good at. It's not just about throwing things together. Mixing a borneo with a hindi, for example, is playing it risky. I think most who's tried this started of thinking you'll get some nice mellow bitter-sweet fragrance, but were instead left with an oil they would rather not have had.

If you want to take a good oil and mix it with a bad one, it's like taking pristine blue and mixing it with a fuzzy grey - you end up with a pretty boring looking colour. If you risk losing an expensive Oud, not easily replaceable, my advise would be the same as that of Oudiferous: first try it in small amounts, maybe in a sample vial, and let us know how it went..

I tried this with KSSS and a Hindi from Ajmal and the only sweetness i got was from the dry dowm and it was very muddled and dry. placing it into a small sample vial is a smart thing to do.

I understand what you are saying.

What if I mixed just one drop of Borneo into a Hindi. Would it give it a fleeting menthol airy wisp right at the start of the oil or would it spoil the Hindi.

It is quite possible that that could be the case, if the the Hindi is of less value, give it a try. There is only one way to find out now brother lol. I would love to know the result of it. Just be sure that there aren't any carrier oils like jojoba oil or anything as these will turn a good oud into a one dimensional experience! The Hindi I used from Ajmal was not pure so the results were disappointing. And I only put a few drops of one of the best cambodi oils on the planet!

Hassan try to contact souq al badu and they can help you insha Allaah being that they have experience mixing pure oud together! I think they could give advice on how many drops to apply without over doing it!

I have had tue pleasure of smelling his Merauke and it was a very good oil akhi. I can't speak for any of his other oils because I never tried them, but I have a sumbawa oil from oudselect that I allowed to age and it is one of my favorites. It smells like orange peels and cannabis buds! I'm not sure if oudselect purchased their sumbawa and Merauke from souqalbadu but their Merauke are similar with souqalbadu's being a bit clearer in terms of the notes.

Oriscent.com
Agaraura.com
Oudimentary.com
Oudh.co.uk

In no particular order, they all sell Borneos, but I have oudselects' Borneo gold. It is last for days when applied to the neck or beard and starts off smelling of feces with a noticeable vanilla note in between.

Try asking agarwoodindonesia.com he is a distiller and has access to other distillers around Indonesia!

Oriscent and AgarAura deal directly with distillers as well!

Hassan, why do want to go directly to the distillers? Are you looking to buy wholesale? Distillers produce large quantities, and so if you find guys who are willing to send you single bottles, I would imagine that there's something fishy going on. I mean, unless they expect you to buy wholesale from them, I can't see why they would give anyone interested in only bottle or two their good oils. I presume like others here, I've received some samples from distillers (they're not hard to find) who offered to send me some. It thought it was strange, but hey, why not? Point is, all of these have been quite boring :(

Anyway, I would like to hear why you want to take this route of trying to deal with them directly..

No I have Not tried anything from agarwoodindonesia, but I read that he has a pretty good oil! As far as basenotes.net is concerned, then no I just read every now then if a new review of an oil is up!
