Assam Organic is a pinnacle of primordial smelling oud. I bought a bottle of the 2007 batch during Oudfest last year - one of my best purchasing decisions. It is a wonderful meditative experience to smell it...inevitably it takes you deep within yourself. A very primal experience.

Glad to see it get some mention here!

Can you go through the progression of you hating the oil to loving it, like what made you try it again and again after that initial first reaction. The reason I ask is because I have the oil and am terrified to try it again over say something like a Oud Yusuf or Aroha Kyaku. Maybe your write-up will give me the courage to go through the progression. : )
Hi there - I had actually warmed up to it a bit by an hour or so into the first wearing of it.. Basically, I took the mindset that it was like a fine scotch or something, that there was a reason so many people enjoyed this style of oud and I would try and see what it was people enjoyed about it...

Go for it! One of the "clichés" of oud is that many who start out favoring friendly oils go on to enjoy what some consider to be challenging oils. When you have time take a swipe and let it progress, you may find you like some stages of the development, maybe with time you'll like all stages.

So gents, (ladies too), since we are on the topic of barn and developing an affinity towards it, I have a couple of oils for you to ponder.
PEARL-ito, I definitely mean you too. Just got a pair of oils from Adam with some game, and I mean that figuratively and literally.

First up is Borai Choco Extreme, AKA, 5 month. Yep, a 5 month soaking on this bad boy. Got barn? Dayum right! You want un-adulturated chocolaty no holds barred barn for bottom dollar? This is your baby. It starts off like rich chocolate milk, then a smooth, rich animalic funk emerges that is oh so right. Would I wear this for a fancy night on the town? Hell no. But when I crave so barny goodness, I am all over this baby.

Second is Royal Bengal. I think this is the first Bengal oil I ever tried so I was not sure what to expect other than more or less a Hindi type scent. Well, this is different, and by a lot. I can't even describe it well. Yes, no question there is a Hindi component here, at the base of the scent. Those barny notes that some of us, and PEARL, you my friend being at the top of my list, crave and revere. But there is also a very potent heart note of pungent, bitter lemon, sinensis sourness which creates a lot of complexity. This one is for experienced noses only, IMHO. This is one of those oils that is super exciting to smell right now but will probably be insanely good in 3-7 years as the oil ages.
Very, very interesting oud.

Don't be scared! Embrace that beauty!
Reapply, take notes, breathe, pay attention to the transformations as they happen.
You are very lucky to have that bottle ;)

Good barny Indian ouds are similar to durian fruit, if you haven't experienced them much they may smell offensive. but once smelt/tasted the delight can become apparent, they are both joyful and wonderful things. Well, they are to me anyway! Fresh durian is now starting to arrive in the UK, for the new season. It''s expensive here but like oud oil the expense can be well worth it. I am so glad I didn't end up selling my bottles of AO'07!

And if you ever do think of selling them, they should go for no less than $800 apiece. ;)

Some people can walk AND chew gum at the same time. Well, when I'm wearing Assam Organic, my mental faculties precipitously regress and all I can think about is the amaaaazing-ness of AO. I just love to love this oil.

Help: Any other EO Hindis that are somewhat close to this? Don't tell me Assam 3000, that one is waaay too pretty :p:p I need the funk. I need piercing oil. A few of you mentioned Oud Zachariya, but I don't see it under the Legends tab.....
