Mukhallats

I'd also say as far as mukhs that use oud, that for the folks who have them, it is the best use of that oud oil. Personally, I have experienced very few oud oils I'd be upset if they were used for mukh. I'm sure there's many out there but I can't generally afford them, and they generally aren't used in mukhs anyways as far as I can tell. I'm sure there are some exceptions but I'm also sure they were used in a mukh with other very precious ingredients if so. And for the other oils, I do believe it is possible to create a mukh that is greater than the sum of it's parts... an oud that may not be spectacular by it's self can be part of a mukh that may be spectacular. I certainly enjoy the mukhs I have that contain oud, and I'd be sad if they were gone.

Dorje, what are some of the mukhalkats you have found to a worthy use of medium-high grades of Oud? I had an ASAQ mukh sample that I can’t remember the name of that was a very nice rose/Oud. Also, Adam used his Hainan Arabi very effectively in one of his Areej creations. Sorry I can’t remember names. Which have been your faves?

From what I have, the mukhs that use the best oud oils are probably Nankun Kodo Kinamantan by Sultan Pasha and Sultan Red Rose Attar by Ensar. Both are incredible and imo are absolutely worthy of using these higher grade oud oils. I have some SP samples that are also up there, like Aurum d'Angkhor, but I don't own a full bottle. I also have many of Taha's mukhs, I don't think the oud used is quite to the quality of the previous two mentioned there is high quality oud in all of them. The Ghaliyahs and smoke-infusion series are probably the best examples. He has made some like Tropica and Aquatica that are form an aquatic accord using ambergris, tobacco, rose and borneo ouds, these are incredible imo.

I find the oud used in these mukhs to be an excellent use for them, while I would hate to have a few of my ouds used in mukhs in general I don't think it's disrespect or a reason to be sad. In most cases I see it as an improvement, a mid-grade oud that may not be spectacular on it's own can be in the context of a great mukh!

i hear you @Dorje. loud and clear. since i grew intolerant of a few given oils i originally really liked or ones that i thought their profile is rare and not going to be seen much, i too (despite some uneasy feeling of disrespect to the artisian and the substance) have started playing around making attar and even edt/edc with them.

it would be great to start a thread on oud perfumery and there talk about layering and share our success and failure stories on blends, etc.

in general i find trat/thai oils and maroke/png oils and sri lankan wp to be wonderful as blending partners. they each have a huge angular bias. thai and the overt dried fruit and gourmand thing, png with their very green, jungle, mud, earth, soil side and sri lankans with the high pitched cinnamon, varnish, salty notes.

i generally like adding trat oils to gourmand creations and ones that i seek a rich, viscous, delicious fruity/woody notes in.
i generally like adding maroke/png in ultra small amounts when i use items like oakmoss, aglaia, violet leaves, vetiver... it just adds a haunting and mysterious dark green/jungle vibe
and as for sri lanka i find the volatile notes push up all other scents with them. i like working with ginger, ginger lily, lotuses, cinnamon and other baking spices and walla patta accentuates all of that and adds a shimering dimmension. i also use it when i use ambergris to further accentuate the saline/oceanic vibe.

vietnam, cambodia, india... are too sacred for me to mess about with.
