Just took a healthy swipe of the People's Sultan. I confess I was initially a bit underwhelmed when I first got it but wow! This seems to have come alive. The scent is more explosive, perfume like and breezy/oceanic by miles right now. I swear, some of these oils can change so much when young. Or it's me. Who knows, and I don't care either way. Very much enjoying it right now.
Patience Doc Patience not patients. :D

How to choose a follow-up swipe after last night’s impromptu visit from @Rasoul S ?
He who doth swung-by with gifts not only of the unreleased Borneo diesel, but also the legendary Nha Trang Ltd aaaaaaaand Guallam Solide!? I chose the gentle, soft spoken beauty of Sultan Abdüs Selam. Subtle enough not to be a show-off, but pretty enough to reconnect me to the bliss of last night’s sniffage.
Perfect choice. Terrific oil but you know that already :)
See you doon

It was really nice to FaceTime with you guys last night. Too bad the technology does not exist to smell through the phone lol.
S. Abdus Selam is a magic oil for me.

Today was a revisit to Kinam Attar. There is an awkward initial funkyness to this oil but once it wears off, the scent becomes sweeter and smoother. The later dry down is just sublime. I do not know the percentage break down but it feels like it is a very high percentage of oud attar.
Likewise doc. Imagine that! One day... better yet speed of light travel :)

Tigerwood 95 from a sample for the second time. I am still trying to understand this one. It hasn't wowed me yet. I get a strange powdery note a couple hours into it.

AZ, Malaysian oud is definitely one that takes a while to get accustomed to. At first it is awkward and hard to get. You will be enormously rewarded in time with these oils. The TW95 is one of the best representations of a top quality Malaysian.

@AZsmell @kesiro
i find, to date, the most variation of oud styles from agarwood grown in cambodia and Malaysia.

look at the evidence: ayu, purple kinam, ahmad, TW95, TWroyale. all malaysia and little to no resemblence or comparison between these oils.

cambodia too with pursat being completley different than koh kong and then koh kood a differentebast all toghether and everything else in between.

on the contrary i find hindi, burmese, laosian, PNG, borneo... oils to have mor similarities than differences with one another.

at the end though all roads lead to vietnam :D

my 2 cents.

scent of last night:
had to wear nha trang ltd again since the first time was a brief encounter and other scents were tried before and after. for yoga practice this time i wore a bit more and refrained from wearing any other scents earlier in the evening. many similarities with the impressions of the first wear i shared above but also new facets were experienced.

on one hand it truly smells of a wild, old, insanely awesome nha trang heartwood on very very low gentle heat (especially after 30min to an hour) and on the other hand there is a kyara incense burning scent. not a kyara stick like translucent path or kyara enju but more of a naked kyara like kyara kokoh. very incense. bitter is the note. bitter is the personality. bitter is the lead role play and supporting cast but not a solo performance like i perceived the first time. there is a cast. a respectful and polite cast that is there to support the last show of a legend. the cast is letting the lead have all the glory. hard to pin point the cast. maybe is b/c i deeply dont want to. somehow with this oil instead of being analytical and breaking it apart i like to instead refuse doing that and just enjoy it as a whole. just turn off the brain and see it for what it is and stopping myself to look for this or that. the oil helps with my goal too as is not busy and easy to let it flow over you and take you to higher plains. further study is required. minus what i still saw as mildly metalic or stainlessy or soemthing alloy like that is out fo place to my nose, the rest is all beauty.

scent of the day:
oud ahmad. one of the most singularly unique ouds. period. a mature oil at ease. non terpy, comforting, with the scent of meadows and fields with grazing 4 legged friends. gentle breeze blowing from a direction of lush flower-filled vista. yes it is very musky but a very mature and fragrant floral musk. traces of anise, fennel tops and a beautiful terra rosa clay being worked into a bowl. even the scent of baked clay.

like abdus selam a quiet oil and one that is a personal wear. i like that i have to go to it and not it forcing itself on me.

have a great day everyone.

Tigerwood Royale (EO) - Was this Oud of the Year 2017? Not sure - but it's a worthy contender - Oud of the Year isn't necessarily the very finest/highest end oud, it's the oud that's got personality, mystique, bang-for-the-buck, and various other qualities that make it "the people's choice." Sometimes the Oud of the Year may also be the finest/highest end of that year - I wonder if this will be the case if/when Ensar releases his Oud Royale made from the Maluku wood? Feel Oud's "Tawau Al Awwal" and Agar Aura's "Royal Chen Xiang" are other good examples of Oud of the Year type contenders..

Tigerwood Royale fits those criteria for sure, and I can say for sure it is Oud of the Day 3/1/2018! It's an oud you keep going back to and discovering more - the notes are so smooth and harmonious together - it has a very "neutral" or perhaps "balanced" or "restrained" sort of scent rather than being particularly fruity or floral or barnyard or dramatic - it's reisnous oudy equanimity - but within this one discovers the fruit and floral and barnyard etc qualities with a little study - they peek out at you here and there.. Man, I should write more oud reviews, I'm crushing it on this one! Anyhow, where was I? Ah yes, the TW Royale - "Soul of the Ancient Tree Perfume" it could be called, a most sumptuous and enigmatic oud..

I so much appreciate your comedic style Josh. Something we all need more of sometimes.

Wearing an eentsy bit of the Kyara Ltd sample Ensar sent me. I can write pages on any topic except this. With this I want to tell you about it and it just seems hopeless. I mean, I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life-what can I possibly know about Kyara? I don’t have the vocabulary or the culture. And yet this stuff is a platinum bullet, totally alerting, totally captivating, centering, a tractor beam to the present. One is aware of being in the presence of something extremely important, that requires attention lest it be missed, like it’d be foolhardy to let the experience pass while being only partially heeded. It’s something important, like a dream where your lover told you the answer to your search and now you can only remember it obliquely. I suppose I could describe the smell but the language would be mundane, like speaking in a language in which you know verbs only in the present tense-childish and unilluminating. This is not just a smell no matter how intense and pleasurable the smell is; this is a presence. It’s a glimpse. It seems older than the world.

Just got back home from extracting my 4 wisdom teeth. The surgeon gave me narcotics for pain and Rx strength anti-inflammatory. Note to be rude, but all need is an Rx of TW95!! Good Lord, TW95 is just so wonderfully splendid.
I guess we can say Phillip gave his eye teeth for a sniff of TW95.
