I hope that what I am looking for is not synthetic

Hello everyone -
My bank account may not agree with me, but I am having a wonderful time discovering the great variety of oils that our artisanal distillers are putting forth ;) Specifically, Maroke oils are playing games with my head because, to me, they start off quite earthy (as in soil), notes of cola and licorice, but then turn dry green (as in green mildew, wet rocks). Just wow!

Anyway, I wanted to ask if any of you have experienced any oils bearing strong resemblance to frankincense? I really enjoy that wood and strong pine combination. That old stone church smell after mass - frankincense, wooden pews, pine pine pine pine, some smoke.

Small problem: I am beginning to doubt whether the aforementioned scent profile exists in artisanal Oud. My nose is probably used to smelling so much synthetic junk out there. Should I simply move on to other things or can anyone orient me towards a specific tree, oil, region or country?

Thank you thank you ;)

Adam of Feel Oud has done a number of creative co-distillations using agarwood and other natural woods and plants - has he done one with frankincense? I do not know.. Anyhow, maybe we should start a petition for Adam to co-distill some fine Hojary frankincense with agarwood?

I know I have smelled some very frankincense-y Oud before on multiple occasions, which I ABSOLUTELY LOVED, but I don't know how to find it. Again, I hope it wasn't synthetic stuff that I was smelling.... We shall persevere @5MeO
SOS anyone?

@ 5meo, Would love to…
However, the main issue will be the time of distillation…
Frankincense takes couple of hours to release the oil… wheres for agarwood it may take weeks…
The good alternative may be an infusion… I may cook frankincense and then infuse it with oud or vice versa, depending on what type of experience we are trying to achieve...
We have donea single co-distillation of many different types of frankincense, vetiver, patchouli, few other things and then I blended it with Vietnamese oud… the blend called
Saigon Attar.
Any recommendations always are more then welcome!

@John You're right, I may have to layer my scent. But I certainly do not want to do it with artisanal Oud. I may use my leftover ASAQ bottles, hehe. As a side note, when you said Omani Bowellia Sacra, my heart skipped a beat. Love love love that stuff.

@Adam Should you ever consider to infuse frankincense with oud or vice versa, I will be the very first to purchase ;)

Hi Philip Chamelion,

Or perhaps Frédéric Bourdin?

You could have a go at making your own scent. I do understand your reluctance at using artisan Oud for a fragrance but I think it will not be disrespectful.

To use an analogy from my own life, I would never use wine in a demi-glace or any other alcohol in food that I would not be happy imbibing on it's own.

Quality counts.

I suggest the Rooh as the lion's share of the composition followed by the Dhul Q then just a few drops of the others oils added at first.

From there let the oils marry for a week then you sample it and if needs be adjust drop by drop slowly until you have your desired profile.

I'm sure others here could steer you better than I could though.

Bonne Chance, mon petit fluerette du choux-fleur enrobé avec sauce mornay. ;)

Dear @RobertOne - I am afraid you're placing waaay too much faith in me by suggesting for me to make my own scent. It's tempting, but I suppose I can start by layering on my skin. Sinon, ce serait la cata dans mon laboratoire MDR. Merci pour les liens, je les sauvegarderai.

In fact I believe that OudforLife deserves a full FREE bottle of it!
What you guys think? I hope you won’t mind =)
Would you love to try an affordable composition first? Lets say with nice, organic Thai Oud?
Or shall we jump straight in to incense grade wild stuff???

A distillers inside connection for Frankincense..... drooooooool. Adam is the ultimate ninja distiller, he is in and out and already made the oil in his hotel room before flying home.

@Adam Man, I am so surprised that you're willing to give this a thought. How awesome is that! I never expected it :)
I love organic oud - doesn't have to be wild. Actually I think it would be very prudent to go with an organic one since it's an experimental batch. Yikes, I would hate to be the cause of wild oud going to waste ....
