sultan suleyman in da house!
major opening. major development. major drydown. not an oil for the faint of heart, yet an instant showstopper for all who smell it. even the "regular" folk in the office and around me that find most oud to smell like paint thinner (my walla patta days), or reek of cinnamon or cheese or animals, found this oud captivating.

is not purple kinam, or green papua or PM, or midori/kinamantan or ... yet somehow someway the hamsters in my head are happy to be in the presence of this oil when they have a craving for any of the previous mentioned oils. me thinks this oil is going to age into an absolute beauty. the opening heft maybe much for some of us (myself included on the days i need quiet oils), but then is all fireworks afterwords.

Hindustan 1 for the calm (yoga) before the storm (night out with the boys).

Absolute show stopper. I love my chugoku and shah jahan and of course Bhutan oils but this little number is just so sublime. Pristine. The blue note is exceptional. Used to be a quiet oil but it has now settled and in fact blossomed to a pretty outword, confident and even somewhat flamboyant oil. High altitude grazing grounds with a faint distant barn note. Blue lotus in a subdued way. And it emits the most calming grounding energy.

Now, What to wear for a late night outing to help keep me wired and upbeat?

Give credit where credit is due. AA royal malinau has a lasting power and a deep base going on to most beautiful 10 plus hour long drydown I have only ever seen in the very best offered by Ensar Oud. I am talking borneo diesel aka white kinam level of ooomph. A masterpiece in my eyes to my nose and the hamsters in my head.

last night unreleased bhutan oil by EO: muana royale. think nirvata muana's clean pristine, rooibos honey vanilla tea with a spoon of cream, but made more ethereal, more focused and perhaps even tiny bit more refined. Similar enough oils to this would be EO naga3000, ayoub, royal imphal and less so: yoshi.
For a true fan of the oils of this general area the subtleties are all different in the above oils, and each of these oils are worth owning. But for a newbie or someone who wants to familiarize themselves to the muana note and oils of the region, i say above oils can all work more or less...

philipina 1 today
really almost identical note and experience as gluing my nose to the subitism heater with a piece of the same Filipino wood on it. pump and cruise style as taha likes to say. i push up the heat for a few seconds then lower it, and repeat every 5-10 minutes. sublime. instant bliss.

the note? tarragon infused honey. and a perfume note that i cant untangle its notes and see the parts, only the sum! and the sum? is pure deliciousness. such a beauty.

mid afternoon pick me upper tea: first flush darjeeling from late april/may of this year's harvest.
what to go with it? shah jahan of course.

this oil has come out of its shell since last i tried it. a young oil for sure but the breeding is evident even at this early stage. the hay harvest note is more pronounced. the bitter almond/tonka bean note is crystallized. there is an emergence of ever so slightly sweet delicate yellow plums. bitter is still the main lead. honestly words dont do this oil justice. imperial oud team have really hit it out of the park on this one. there is an old old hong kong sinesis skin note to this oil ditto a suggestion of taha's royal lao and ensar's chugoku senkoh. mind bending...

along with hindustan 1, my two most fav oils from india. a bitterness and high vibration to this oil as if it was kinam. the energy in this oil is beyond words. gun to head i may even have to choose shah jahan over beloved hindustan 1. marginally... too bad i wasnt around when ensar had some of those older release hindis. i still wonder what assam kinam was/is like... hint hint ;)

Revisited Tigerwood Royale today as I bid adieu to Tigerwood '95 and Sultani 1990.

I've long since considered Tigerwood Royale the quintessential Malaysian profile, deeply resinous, heavy, and contemplative.

Today I got a glimpse of a purple vein within it reminding me of the great Purple Kinam, but like 10 shades darker...

Definitely more of a night-time, or autumn oil for me =)

The talk of this evening was impermemance and embracing it. What brought it on was the rationing of oils like GP, archinam ... that are now sold out. Or feeling shitty when wearing them. Screw it. There will be another future oil that will be like today’s GP. On that note:

A major dollop of Nha Trang limited went on my wrist. Probably 1/10th of my 0.5 stash.

In a world of ouds (hobbits) there is gandolf (Nha Trang ltd.). A wise sage. How can we call this nectar Oud and oils made from young infections and low grade shavings also get called Oud.

I can talk about the note but really it’s about way more than that with this microcosm. Is like taking a shuttle to outer galaxy. Damn I love Nha Trang. Holly grail for me. Vietnam since day one has been talking to me differently. An oil that has me totally giddy. Good thing bed time is not for another few hours. I am wired!

The scent? Bitter. Terminal bitter with a rich sappy sweet thick leatherwood honey note(but better) , a rounded out cooling note that is not patchouli mint or camphor. It just is what it is. Scent of the Angel wings as I take flight with it toward a world beyond worlds.

Evolution? Development? In the first 30 minutes, none! Tenacious oil that confidently keeps going and doesn’t give a damn what or who is in its way.

Kyara Ltd. 2.0 maybe more immediately satisfying and obvious. It has more bells and whistles. More wow factor. But Nha Trang ltd is quietly sitting in its path and radiating with all its might. Obelisk the tormentor.

Unbelievable happened:

As I was smelling Bhutan red (an older traditional well water beast of a Bhutan oil) cause something minerally in nha Trang reminded me of it, my 3.5 year old boy Ario asked me for a dot. I give him a small wear here and there but of oud like Yusuf jsl or gp. On went the Bhutan oil and he says yucky! I asked what do u smell? He says is bad. I ask but what? He said poopoo. Lol.

Now get this.

He sees me sniffing my wrist and He asks me what I have on my wrist? I have him take a whiff and magic happened. He loved it. Started rubbing his hands all over my wrist like a crazy person and kept sniffing his hands like a mad dog!

Lol. Quite the scene. Nha Trang did it. I am screwed now. Imagine him asking me for a swipe here on out. I asked him what does it smell like? He said I don’t know. Yummy!

I guess we are wired to love certain oudwhile others are a acquired taste.

To honour today’s Labour Day holiday; a day to pause and reflect on how hard we work and the sacrifices we make to sustain ourselves and our families, nothing else is more justifiable than a swipe of the best of the best. The distillation formerly known as Borneo Diesel: White Kinam from EO.

One of the problems with experiencing mind blowing wood chips or shavings, is that you can’t take it with you when you’re out and about. I stumbled into a tea house a while back that was selling an Oud chip heater you can plug into your cigarette lighter. Very nice, but I gave up cars for Oud, thank you very much. You can fumigate your clothes, your beard, your hair, but it’s not the same a few hours later. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very beautiful oils available that give you satisfaction all day long, but never quite same.

Henceforth, problem solved.
I currently have the distinct smell of Malinau chips heating away on my skin, perhaps even bubbling away from within my own dermis. Unbelievable.

I don’t often curse, but when I do, it’s after I’ve applied White Kinam.

I've showered, changed shirt, and am going about the day and the scent is still radiating off my wrist. Remarkable oil and a defining moment in my oud journey.
