I didn't realize gyrinops was a "peasant" of heating woods! I was thinking with good grade/ quality heating wood you'd get a pleasant aroma and not varnish/fishy/ salty or anchovy notes. Haha. I'll see for myself if I can.

I agree it would be informative to hear Ensar and Thomas speak about the generalities of how well stored oud oils can be expected to age and what would likely happen given sufficient time. After all these guys have been at it long enough to have first hand experience.
Hell no. It isn’t. Gyrinops is AMAZInG. It just doesn’t fit into the classification, aesthetics and sensibilities of Japanese and perhaps only some of them.

Back to oils and aging, you wana know what is the ultimate goal for an oud to become? What aging is all about? Try port moresbey. Your questions will be answered. An oil in perfect harmony. Nothing out of sync. No angularity. No individual notes. PM is one round sound cohesive put together well breed oil. Sean Connery of later stages past 55-60 years of age in a black tuxedo.

Btw boys Ensar has got the legend back from the dead .... Borneo 3000

I missed the first batch I'm so looking forward to this ... we as Oud heads owe it to Ensar to release the oil at that price [emoji120]

Is the third iteration if I understood correctly. I pick up a bottle. I am expecting basically a greener malinau. Still a malinau. Fully malinau as we know in b50k, Borneo diesel, white kinam... but a greener and one with more of a cooling note.

Yeah third Borneo 3000 but I'm certain Ensar wouldn't have released this unless it met the Borneo 3000 standard post ageing it ...

for me this would be my first Borneo experience from Ensar so I dont have any benchmark to compare with

I couldn't disagree more with our Japanese colleagues. I think heating Walla wood, even on low heat, offers joys that are not to be found from any other type of agarwood. From the oreganoed algaed peppermint veering on spearmint to the kinamic (poor man's kinam, no doubt) semi-medicinal vibes, I just find it a very happy and gleeful sort of thing to do in the evening, when you just want to kick back and pretend your work is done for the day....

As for the aging of ORSL, you can expect many wrinkles along with bald spots to appear amid its thinning grays, nay it'll turn into a wiser, more slowly speaking, deeper meaning sage marinated in oxygen and the sheer weight of time. ;)
Oooooh. That orsl in future note sits well with me. In how many years you are guesstimating @Ensar Oud ?

And re gyrinops in general and walla included I agree with you. Gyrinops species are the best thing happens to world of oud after the old Hindi cambodi Vietnamese and kinam started disappearing.

I too am sure it will be just fine. Damn fine likely now if not highly likely in the near future.

I have had a number:
Borneo diesel
White kinam
B50k
All above are malinau too by the way. And all three at least at the lowest 3 to 10 times the price.

And midori, kinamanatan, sultan mustafa/ahmet/Abdul hamit.

I’ll share my impression shortly. Fingers crossed.

Went for dinner with @Simla House and @Rasoul S last night and caught my first glimpse of Port Moresby and a revisit of Borneo Diesel. First wear of PM and 2nd of BD. Both insanely deep oils, but in very different ways. Also a couple whiffs of Jayapula off the vial...was too intense at the moment, but definitely heft with intrigue. Three day oud break and getting back into it with these guys was a real treat.

Been just short of 24 hours and PP is hanging on after showering and hand washes. Going to follow up now with a nice chunk of PM Privee and veg on the couch. :)
Bang on and 100% resonating woth my take. Yes to jayapula. Yes to PM legendary status. Yes to oriscent signature and endless depth of Borneo diesel. Was a great evening.

Enjoy melting on the couch. Pm privee is guaranteed to do just that. Insanely intensely pitched. Is a wow wow wood grade.

I wonder how EO B3000 (version 3) compares to B50k, B2000 and AA Kencana v3? Those are my Malinau reference points. I was pleasantly surprised at the price offered as I have learned to temper my expectations, in general, for oils below this price point. According to the write up B3000 has a solid Malinau Borneo heritage.

i havent tried b2000.
b50k is steam distilled making the profile more streamlined and without as many changes from opening to drydown as with hydro distilled oils. thats been my experiecne with steam distilled oils. also b50k is very yellow sunshine and almost devoid of any and all green notes. tiniest of spearmint at most. i love b50k. the drydown is a blast and very woody with cinnamony.

with all due respect to taha, kencana v3 simply doesn't hold up in the world of malinau oils (in my view). i detect some microcarpa wood in the feedstock (lending that bitter somber root veg green note) as well as that strong smoke which is totally not fitting of malinau according to my taste! malinau is all about lush meadows, floral, pollen, honey, cinammon heart candy and delicious round pretty notes. almost no bitterness and nothing earthy, root veg, damp or raw. now if you were to mention his royal malinau and then i would say it belongs in a whole different tier above all the rest and in the league of white kinam, borneo diesel...

i personally have a feeling b3k is a sentimental statement by ensar and priced lower than it should have been simply to make it more affordable for most oud lovers to see what "REAL" malinau is all about. i could be wrong but thats what i pick up from his write up and knowing how my own taste correlates with his, i put my money where my mouth is and got not 2.5 but 3 grams. pls note by "REAL" i am not saying other malinaus from other vendors are fake or others have knowingly bought nearing areas wood for malinau, etc. etc. no i don't mean that. i just mean if you have experienced the malinau of the old days and the type of wood and oil that makes you understand why malinau is malinau, like what makes pusong, nha trang, hainan, aceh, ceram, upper assam, tarakan, holy grails of agarwood, mailnau too belongs to a whole different tier and you will not accept anything less once you have met her in all her beauty. in other words, if you have only ever tried ensars nha trang anthole wood and thought you know nha trang or that is what the fuss is all about, you would be totally wrong. the wood that has given nha trang, holly land level of respect is the century-old heartwood that is like petrified resin and its scent is 360 degrees different and unique. it puts some kinam to shame. from what is available, i say if you wana see malinau at its best and see why i lose my mind over malinau: then white kinam should be on your list. unwarped and zoomed in on all the glory of malinau.

Enjoying vintage EO 1985 Encens Royale today!
Last night it was my responsibility to insure accurate countdown clocks at NASA's Kennedy Space Center for the first launch of SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule at 2:49 am Eastern time. If this mission to the International Space Station splashes down successfully 5 days from now in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida expect to see two American astronauts repeat the trip this summer in the first U.S. manned mission since the Space Shuttle Atlantis last launched eight years ago. An exciting evening to be sure. I know this is off topic...I couldn't help but share.

Morning Swipe - ASO Jannah

My first PNG oud I'm learning and exploring slowly

So what I get with Jannah

It Starts off a bit medicinal with some aged wood feeling ... and then slowly some spices begin to kick in may be clove or cinnamon but mostly cinnamon I didn't get any floral here .... and you think this is where itll end ... I get mint before it settled into a wood and only wood note

Positive first impression of ASO and also my first PNG oil ... my second PNG will be Port Papua which I await from Ensar to study this profile a bit more..

Compared to any and all Ensar Papuans I found jannah to be the least green while still being green. It also doesn’t have a certain damp, forest floor feel that oils like papuamantan have a touch of.

Port papua is more high pitched, incense, pretty and mind buzz while jannah is more round and soft. I like both quite a bit while neither imho come close to green papua. Enjoy the study!

Sultan suleyman earlier today. Soul stirring. Impeccable. Profound. Nuff said.

This evening is lying down on a hay bed with four legged friends nearby. This barn is well ventilated well kept and also doubles as a tea drying attic as well as tanning leather workshop. Bhutan red. Lovely oil. A distinct red mineral iron rust kinda note in there too. Regal.
