I wonder how EO B3000 (version 3) compares to B50k, B2000 and AA Kencana v3? Those are my Malinau reference points. I was pleasantly surprised at the price offered as I have learned to temper my expectations, in general, for oils below this price point. According to the write up B3000 has a solid Malinau Borneo heritage.
i havent tried b2000.
b50k is steam distilled making the profile more streamlined and without as many changes from opening to drydown as with hydro distilled oils. thats been my experiecne with steam distilled oils. also b50k is very yellow sunshine and almost devoid of any and all green notes. tiniest of spearmint at most. i love b50k. the drydown is a blast and very woody with cinnamony.
with all due respect to taha, kencana v3 simply doesn't hold up in the world of malinau oils (in my view). i detect some microcarpa wood in the feedstock (lending that bitter somber root veg green note) as well as that strong smoke which is totally not fitting of malinau according to my taste! malinau is all about lush meadows, floral, pollen, honey, cinammon heart candy and delicious round pretty notes. almost no bitterness and nothing earthy, root veg, damp or raw. now if you were to mention his royal malinau and then i would say it belongs in a whole different tier above all the rest and in the league of white kinam, borneo diesel...
i personally have a feeling b3k is a sentimental statement by ensar and priced lower than it should have been simply to make it more affordable for most oud lovers to see what "REAL" malinau is all about. i could be wrong but thats what i pick up from his write up and knowing how my own taste correlates with his, i put my money where my mouth is and got not 2.5 but 3 grams. pls note by "REAL" i am not saying other malinaus from other vendors are fake or others have knowingly bought nearing areas wood for malinau, etc. etc. no i don't mean that. i just mean if you have experienced the malinau of the old days and the type of wood and oil that makes you understand why malinau is malinau, like what makes pusong, nha trang, hainan, aceh, ceram, upper assam, tarakan, holy grails of agarwood, mailnau too belongs to a whole different tier and you will not accept anything less once you have met her in all her beauty. in other words, if you have only ever tried ensars nha trang anthole wood and thought you know nha trang or that is what the fuss is all about, you would be totally wrong. the wood that has given nha trang, holly land level of respect is the century-old heartwood that is like petrified resin and its scent is 360 degrees different and unique. it puts some kinam to shame. from what is available, i say if you wana see malinau at its best and see why i lose my mind over malinau: then white kinam should be on your list. unwarped and zoomed in on all the glory of malinau.
