Indeed my friend, that Purple Kinam is just out of this world! I had some a couple days ago and was just stunned by its magnificence - found myself giving a prayer of gratitude..

The finest Malaysian oils seem to have that otherworldly quality - I had a bit of Feel Oud's "Super Global KL Oud" last night - quite different profile than PK but certainly the otherworldly qualities.. Apparently he co-distilled that oil with some Maroke and Cambodi chips - I cannot smell the Maroke though, to me the Malaysian dominates and the overall scent profile reminds me of Berkilau (the more I explore these oils the less Berkilau and Super Global KL remind me of Purple Kinam..)

Scent of the day is...

Wonderful Insect Repellent. No joke

It's been tested in Thailand on our last trip there and it works just as well as 95% DEET.

I am now officially out of oud and fine fragrances as the scant remains have been packaged up for a friend that I will post tomorrow (Oudamberlove) ^^^EDIT: Oh, I see you schlepped over here now!^^^

Also, thanks for the welcome back, guys, nice to be here.

Ok so last night I strolled by ASQ and asked about their Kalla Kassi Oils, I was shown two bottles of KK oil. One was 60 years old and one was very aged at 180 years old. I requested a sample and was given one of each and this is my double swipe of the day.

Yesterday went with Jing Shen Lu, fabulous Thai kyen. I see what Ensar was saying when he said this should have been a Sultan oil. I have one of his Thai Sultans (which is young but blossoming into one of my favorites of the line) and though I definitely prefer the Sultan, Jing Shen Lu definitely holds its own. What lovely citric fruits with a beautiful dry down.

Last night, courtesy of a kind friend, I sampled the legendary KZ85. Thick would be selling it short. I am no expert at all, but I have had my share of other absolutes, resins, etc. This one does share a ton in common with labdanum absolute. I am clearly not stating it is, but there are definitely some common scent and physical characteristics. Very interesting for sure, not something I would wear often, but interesting nonetheless.

I have not sampled Berkilau or Super Global KL. You did that review on Sutera Ungu where you mentioned the otherworldly quality in these high quality Malaysians and I totally agree. Its odd, they go one of two ways for me, the PK/Sutera Ungu way, gorgeous topnotes, otherworldly. Or they go the way of thick, heavy, chocolate and mud. Perhaps its the quality of the wood? Perhaps the technique? Both? Other?

***On further thought, I didn't take into account the fine Malaysians like Sultani, Kannan Koh, Tigerwood 95. Those are clearly super quality Malaysians, obviously different from PK/SU type, but don't have that muddy, chocolate profile some of the others I've tried do. Perhaps the experts could weigh in here?***

In this moment in space time it is EO-Encens D'Angkor! Ensar why is this not up on the legends page? It was your beautiful poetic description of this oil that made me take the leap into the mysterious world of oud!
Uh oh! It's not?? Must be a programming glitch! I'll take a look at it and see if I can retrieve it from the server.... Thanks for pointing that out, Chris! :)

I've never managed to pull off a 'chocolatey' Malaysian. The closest I've come is Oud Yaqoub, and that was a cultivated Thai, albeit from a 60 year-old tree. Really old school distillation set up with a very unique soaking style and special ground water were responsible for Yaqoub (not to mention the age of the tree). My Malaysians either come out like Purple Kinam or like Sultan Süleyman.

The only decent 'chocolatey' and even slightly 'muddy' oil I've seen artisanally distilled would be Cantik Candan. Maybe Taha can shed some light on how he pulled that one off. I think the system was very antiquated, really old Cambodian pots if I recall correctly. I'd be curious to know more about the condenser.... Other than that.... what you're looking at is pretty much cultivated wood cooked the wrong way....

I know there are vested interests in this market, and the motto 'oud is oud is oud is oud' no matter who you source it from is being played rather loudly these days. But just take a quick peek at the 'Let's Talk Oud' thread, where you can see seven months of futile hunts for wild agarwood and a million mishaps one after the other with nothing to show for it – and you can quickly figure out where all these 'reasonably priced' ouds are really coming from. The behind the scenes reality of most 'wild' oils is quite different to what consumers are led to believe, unfortunately.

@Ensar. Thanks. I should have clarified that I don't particularly care for the muddy chocolate versions. Makes total sense to me, either the wood is of less quality, likely cultivated, and/or the technique is poor.

I have been quite open about the oils I prefer, but also quite open to trying any oil in general. Good oud is good oud no matter who crafts it. But the thinking that all oud is oud is oud is absolutely preposterous. It's a made up fallacy.

Today I have on Kynam Emerald. A Maroke lover asked me about it, and I don't have experience with Marokes per say, but this one is a Malaysian that's dressed up in PNG clothing. I would never guess this was forged from Malaysian wood.

For me it's like being shipwrecked on an uninhabited tropical island, crystalline blue-green lagoon, with a vast jungle looming behind.

As I was approaching Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) to come and perform the mini pilgrimage (Umrah) before putting on the 2 special sheets I generously put the beautiful Tigerwood Royale on. Just beautiful for a very special occasion. I will pray for everyone on the group here. Stay blessed and happy Oudding.

Wow! You guys are seriously hopeless Ouddicts! Haha then again, why else would we all gather here, throwing hard earned money into some strange oils and smelling our swiped skins to no end, just to satisfy our passion and craving for the most unique olfactory experience? ;)

Smelling your skin is weird !!?
Ok , and this is not a joke :
I have an African grey Congo parrot her name is Miso (by the way this is not a Japanese type of Oud !! This is her name ! Because I know you guys are sick about oud and everything is related to oud for you :D , anyway everyday when the time comes for my swipe she jump on my hand and she get some oil on her feet plus she keeping rubbing her head on my hand then all her feathers (so far that's very cool !! ) , after that and till next day (swipe) every time I crave for more Oud I grab Miso and smell her !!!!! And oh my god she smell great , even though she take a bath every other day but the oud stick on her feathers for a long time .
Now tell me I'm ok !!!!!!!!?
Buddy we need a mental treatment , end of story.
By the way I asked Ensar to exchange Miso with some Oud bottles and he refused my offer ! And I think he's wrong she's expect in Oud (she hates any other synthetic
Perfume , just Oud , and again I swear I am not kidding).

Oh , Today my SOTD is nothing for the third week now I cant smell anything (zero) really bad type of sinus infection , l told my wife that I'm getting worried if I lose my sense of smell then I can't enjoy Oud any more , anything else is ok but not this one !!!
She looks at me and she says : you are definitely sick and need help !

"Cantik Candan" (AA) - swiped some of this tonight, Ensar got me thinking about it - this and Kemewahan (AA) certainly have the dark, chocolate, earthy type scent to them - quite distinct for sure.. Not as immediately enjoyable as some other ouds, but a lot of depth and intrigue.. There is nothing off-putting about the scent - but it occupies the "black" end of the spectrum for me - some oils smell green, some are red or gold - Cantik Candan is black.. Quite a delightful oud actually..

Kemewahan is more "brown" in scent, and evokes an enormously rich woody quality - like old furniture - for awhile Kemewahan was my favorite oud, and I rate it very highly..

Joyoud baby! Well, I am in no position to judge, believe me, but think you are OK? Maybe? But damn, 3 weeks of no oud is torture! Get well soon amigo!!

Hello to all!

My scent of the day is Oud Yusuf from Ensar Oud. This has to be one of the sweetest ouds I have been introduced to.
I would like to check with other members on their opinions of a Oud oil with good silage and strong projection.

Welcome Sapphire! Yes, Oud Yusuf. I think most here have experience with it. It was a great starting place with Oud for most of us.
Regarding your question, Oud in general is going to be more of a personal scent and stay closer to the skin then, say an EdP. But there are oils which project more.Sillage is definitely variable.

I do not know what your overall experience with Oud is, but there are many different scent categories to choose from and it helps to know which you really prefer. I am a big fan of sampling whenever possible so I suggest you consider doing so. Ensar has great sampler packages and Taha (Agar Aura) as well as Adam (Feel-Oud) will sell samples as well.

Ensar's Aroha Kyaku and Taha's Hirta are excellent oils with very good projection and sillage for Ouds and represent the best bang for the money IMO. Their scent profiles are very different though. AK took me a while to warm up to as it is a very strong scent, but now I absolutely love it!

Best,
Phil

Amen to Aroha Kyaku. I truly consider this to be a go to Oud on any occasion. I am here in Saudi Arabia and they got tons of Oud shops. Quality isn't what I have been using of Ensar. I asked for them to show me their most expensive one. And after I smelled what he had, I showed him the AK. He stood stunned and I smiled and walked out of the store.
