I received 3 samples with my recent AA order of Royal Lao and Kencana V3. I took an immediate liking to the sample of Mardelong the "Thai/ Malay sandwich." There was a free shipping offer so I decided to purchase a 2.5g bottle. To my nose it's sort of a boozy oud with hints of tobacco, vetiver, vanilla and cola. I'm looking forward to a swipe of a sample of Nashila to experience/ evaluate that one. What is your experience/ view on Nashila Rasoul?
hi @Martin ,
nashila is both highly typical and atypical oil. typical of taha's style of going for purity and nothing but the aromatic compounds in the wood aesthetic. presenting mother nature with minimizing the role of aromas added via the process by man. think sashimi over a braised dish. atypical in that you wont really find hindi oils like this. overall taha's oil are more about heart notes and top notes and if there is a barn note is that intrinsic to the wood. there are many compounds in nature (indole, rotundone, coumarin...) that can have elements of barn in them. as you try more and more you will see this for yourself. for example white pepper corn has that horse/barn lie note due to the presence of aromacheminal rotundone.

the oil itself is a like a peacock tail. so many colors and aromas to be dazzled by. one would think is some serious technique and fractioning at play, but when you gently heat the wood he used to make this oil (he sent me few tiny pieces), you will be shocked to see the aromas of this oil are very much in the wood itself. this is very hard to believe, but it is so. stefan @Simla House and @Micheal Smith can attest to this.

moving on, cola/cream soda is very much part of some malay oils and a note i have yet to see anywhere else, except maybe malinau in borneo where the note is more of an orange creamsicle, orange vanilla milkshake.

looking forward to your thoughts on kencana. an oil that is a bit too young for my personal liking and the agarwood smoke notes while is very much sought after by many, is a distraction and an unwelcome component for me at this time in my journey of oud appreciation. after some time on the skin, the classic malinau notes come out to play. if you like what you see ensar's borneo 50 k is a must sample for you. if you love it and cant get enough of the malinau note, then is time to go for white kinam!

Monster study session this afternoon, courtesy of Rasoul and two pots of saffron tea.
Probably two dozen incenses explored, some wood on the burner (Ceram 97 was the highlight for me today), and then swipes of Archinam, Chugoku Senkoh (unanimously, loved by all in attendance) Papuamantan, Kanzen , Nashila, Oud Extraordinaire (OE), White Kinam, Guallam Solide, probably more. First time trying OE, was pleasantly surprised. An appropriately priced farmed wood that is rich in honey characteristics. If you love gently spiced honey, you’ll love this. Unisex, and works well in cooler climates. I’ll be curious to see how it is once the warm weather arrives.

Just as Rasoul was talking about the rainbow of colour found in Taha's Nashila, this happened:

I have been Oudless for 3 weeks due to the busy holiday and travel season. Now back to the old grind... ready to swipe... but my body has other plans. I have fallen ill, and I find myself still Oudless. In my mind, however, I have swiped Yunnan Exclusive. Not in the mood for airy top notes, perfume, or whimsy. I want OUD. Yunnan Exclusive scratches that itch.

oh no. get better dear Phillip. and i know exactly what you mean. sometimes you need oud with big cojones. the plus side is when your nose and body is ready for it, the abstinence is going to make the swipes all that more enjoyable and if anything like me, you will discover new facets in even oils you were intimately familiar with.

Scent of the night:
Had Hindi on my mind

Started with IO bahadur. A pretty, minimal barn, high elevation, yellow sunshine scented, lychee accented, clean Nagaland oil.

Agar aura Hindustan 1 came next
Gorgeous blue sky, alpine countryside, distant barn and cowboy village notes while driving top open in a modern cabriolet. This blue accord is truly unique and a thing of beauty. Arguably one of the most if not the most ethereal Hindi.

Night is young. Chugoku senkoh is whispering. Let’s see if it will find itself on my chin.

Have a fragrant day/evening friends.

Wearing some Koh Kong today. What is your fav Cambodi?

none. lol.

when i started out seriously in oud nearly 2 years back (a couple hours a day one way or another spent on wood, incense and oil daily since...) i loves walla patta and cambodi oils for their fireworks opening and those insanely vaporous pretty and psycheledic top notes. tastes have changed. i got tired of those top note heavy stuff and took more liking to the heavier base adn quietter opening oils. then came the love affair with senkoh/gen 3 oils. then came the sultan series oil infatuation. later came oriscent oils. now while i have love for all, i seem to appreciate OLD oils the most.

so i have to say kambodi 76 from ensar for it is a majestic, round, mature, polite, civilized liqueur of an oil. if asking for a younger cambodi oil, i go for agar aura kanzen for its green oolong bitter notes and bittersweet cool mentholated creme brulee notes. i have to also acknlwedge that al shareef oud layth is certainly worth the study specially if you have a bit of a sweeter tooth and like to see leather/ambergris, potpurri adn dried rose and rosehip hosue signature notes in your cambodi. is very very good oil.

Lol, glad you’re honest.

This one I’m wearing has some similarities with plantation Thai oils I’ve smelled. It’s a bit 2 dimensional for my taste and a bit high pitched. I thing I would much prefer a incensy cambodi that has some balls, naw mean?

I think I might be going a bit backwards with my journey. I got stuck on Hindis for (too) long...now I’m a bit burnt out.

Now I’m interested in the Indos, Malays, Filipinos...stuff like that. However, I will probably eat crow when I try the “spectacular” stuff I’ve seen people talk about in the forums when it comes to Hindi/Lao/Bengal Ouds from the “major” vendors.

Still sad I didn’t get to check out the Royal Bengal Adam came out with quite a while ago. My sample got smashed in the mail and I moved on with my life LOL

Today is Royal Lao by Taha. This smells nothing like the Lao Oud I’m used to, which is a welcome change. Obviously need to spend some time to understand this.

I think just based on initial smell alone my favs will be Nashila, Royal Lao and Pursat. However, there is something very interesting to me about Mardelong. This smells pretty different from what I’m used to with Thai Ouds. There is a “soaring” quality to it and a special complexity I’m picking up just off the dabber tube, which is awesome. Blessings Oud friends.

No doubt that when Walla Patta is juiced a certain way, you’ll get a bottle of beauty. Hell!, I’m still smitten by that pretty scent in Sinharaja X. I wish I could isolate it, but I guess Ensar already did something like that with SS.
@Oudamberlove totslly know what you mean. And according to vancouver our guild, that note in the awesome sin x you speak of is dry sauna made with walla planks. Or thing of a beach hut made from walla patta, scorching under the sun. And guess what add this to the oriscent kyara signature, sprinkle some Chinese booze, inject some red and green Vietnamese notes and you get: Ceylon solide

Would be great if you had tried ensars latest Laos and give us feedback of how u see it compared to others. Back to the above. But yes, aside from those overt dirty Laos oils we have all tried, royal Lao is unlike any other. The part high mountain Assamese, part chinese sinesis, part Vietnamese profile is intriguing. Plus that trace of smoke and resin pack wood on heater.

Stay tuned in then cause it will be mostly none Hindi oud from my side. Not that I don’t love them but my calling is elsewhere. In green oils. Not even red ones and I have tried many badass red oud: Kambodi76, kinam rouge, Nha Trang Ltd, Kyara Ltd., pursat 05 even of Koh Kong royale. Kuzen and ksk. Yet I have one word for you:
Papuya.
The end.

The Royal Lao is just wow. Chinese on the drydown **melting in chair**

Ensar will be soon...trying to rub together a few dimes.

Wearing Kayu today. Reminds me of a Hirta oil I tried, but much deeper. I wonder if this is too...didn’t really read the write-up. Cheers!
