about new releases

@ibn: Way back when me friend contacted him he had non of it in stock. Then Out of the blue he contacted my friend and indicated that he has an Indian Oil in stock and that was the only oil he had, so we ordered and we didn't really ask him which one is it. That is why I recommended that any interested party to contact him directly and see what's available as the stock seems to move and change frequently. I can also probably ask him and I'll report back.

I was recently able to sample one of. I believe soon to be released, Ensar's Oud called Shuyb. Here is my first impression of it after couple of uses : " Light Tangerine color, like the sun rays encapsulated in a drop. IMHO, this got to be the most ethereal, translucent Indian Oil Profile Scent (It is from Burma). Somehow they kept the outline of the barnyard/fecal notes abut hollowed out all that is off putting and instead jammed it with amberish, Borneo like Campho-ric notes. Every thing seemed hushed about this Oil. It is fruity, yes fruits like Apricot and sweet tangelos. All, spread over vertiver roots and ginger. It is truly amazing how Kinam like the opening notes and Kinam here as in Oriscent Broneo Kinam. This is a beautiful Oud for a Women or a Man who wishes to wear an Indian like Oud around his woman without off-putting her (A dilemma for a lot of guys). A well worn Persian carpet with faded animals in the forest scenes is spread over knee high green grass that sways in the gentle afternoon breeze rolling over the dormant hills. fluffy clouds spread over head evenly with bright spots of blue skies vying for space. I laid on my back. I face the sky. I smell Shuyb". Scores high in my likability scale 9 out of 10. Look for this oil when it's released. It definitely comes with high recommendation.

Shuayb would be almost like the feminine version of Nuh, but don't get me wrong that this is a feminine oil. It is not. It is just so refined and delicate and as such it really does not compare to Idrees or Khidr whom are much more pronounced, strident and forth coming. Shuayb on the other hand is subtle whispering, quite mind and a dreamy conversation.

Yes very very strange indeed Masstika! This was a thread started by myself and I have certainly not removed it from my end. We all know this was a hot topic and I just hope there is a simple reason for this thread going missing. Perhaps the moderator's can shed some light to this mystery?

We received complaints about the heated debate, and so suspended the thread. Yet we are open to casting a vote. If you would like to see the thread reinstated, please PM me. If you would like for it to remain suspended, PM me. I will do a vote count tomorrow night, and announce the final decision.

@Luigi, as you know activity on the forum is generally less over the weekends with many members busy doing other things. If this must go to a vote, I suggest you give a few more days before counting the votes.

Personally I strongly feel there is no need to suspend this thread. If this thread is suspended then people will complain about the Borneo 50K thread and ask for it to be suspended too! This is because the heated debate actually started here and spilled over on to the Noir thread. This is a slippery slope Luigi! By all means please do moderate individual postings as you have done where appropriate but removing an entire thread that contains perfectly legitimate content is just going too far and too harsh in my opinion.

I do not speak on behalf of any of the vendors and wish to remain non partisan however, doubts were cast on the legitimacy of a vendor's products who responded to those concerns on the now suspended thread while the concerns raised by another vendor still remain!

We all migrated from Basenotes precisely because of the heavy handedness of the moderators over there! Please reinstate the suspended thread and show restraint as you have done so far and let the readers form their own opinions on the so called 'heated' debate.

Thanks

I agree with Mr Oud's points - suspending the entire Noir thread seems unnecessary. I was surprised to first see posts censored and then the entire thread disappear, this was an unpleasant dejavu throwback to the late Oud Group on Basenotes when free and honest exchange of opinions became all but impossible there. I hope that what happened with the Noir thread is not a sign of things to come on Gaharu.com.

Luigi, I understand that maintaining and moderating a public forum (provided to us for free) is a lot of hard work. I am personally very thankful to you and whoever else was the inspiration and the generous donor to make this site possible.

We've all come here to discuss our favourite aromatic substance and it's understandable that sometimes our passion for oud and personal tempers may result in lively debates. But unless there is a clearly defined set of rules and guidlines how do we know what our boundaries on this site are? I was under the impression that Gaharu.com's informal "constitution" encouraged all to "Feel free to post and share all your wildest oud dreams and fantasies. .... Respect others, and respect you shall be shown!" I couldn't find any mention anywhere on the site about official policies or posting guidlines. If such rules have indeed been posted and I just missed them please point that out for the benefit of all posters here. Over at Basenotes the problem wasn't the rules per se but the liberal interpretation of said rules by a moderator as well as a clear double-standard when a certain vendor was allowed to have an entire social group dedicated to discussion and promotion of his products while others couldn't even mention their products without the fear of being persecuted by the over-zealous moderator. Both Ensar and Taha were effectively denied the right to participate in Basenotes discussions in any meaningful manner because anything they said could be declared to be "shameless advertising" and lead to threats and censorship. I sincerely hope that we don't ever witness anything remotely similar to that here on Gaharu.com

Gaharu.com has every potential of becoming the prime internet gathering place for oud afficionados and the world's most important depository of oud knowledge. Free discussion, mutual and equal respect for all, transparent rules and unbiased moderation can make this forum the haven it we flocked to after the flame of life was all but stomped out of the oud group on Basenotes.

I agree wholeheartedly with Igor's comments above. Again I join Igor in being grateful to you Luigi and others who may have been instrumental in setting up this forum.

This forum is still in its infancy and has the momentum to be the best Oud resource on the planet! However in my humble opinion, this can only be realised if a degree of freedom is given to members to respectfully express their opinions and concerns without fear of censorship. As the moderator Luigi, you must remain non partisan at all times (which I am sure you are) however, the indiscriminate editing of posts and suspending of threads is not going to help and will only serve to cast doubts in the minds of members which will inevitably cause irreversible damage to the reputation of this forum as we have all recently witnessed at Basenotes.

As Igor points out even I have had trouble in locating site guidelines and posting rules. If these do not exist then I suggest they are drawn up pretty quickly in full and free consultation with forum members. I would suggest posting a draft version of forum rules as a separate thread for members to comment upon.

Bring back the thread brotha, it's only right. Maybe you can edit the two threads Borneo 50K and Borneo Noir and place their respected opinions in a new thread dedicated to debate and or quarrels where any vendor can stand behind, clarify, and clear up any misconceptions about their products if the need arises.

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I understand how this event might have brought up some flashbacks of the basenotes fiasco. The nature of the board is that we have both vendors and customers exchanging ideas. Naturally there will be references to people and their products. This is not a problem, as you've all seen so far. Direct advertising, however, is a problem. This is not an advertising portal. There have been direct references to products from known and unknown vendors, with detailed descriptions of the products. There's nothing wrong with such posts, as long as it's informative and contributes to constructive discussion. 'Such and such an oil smells like this, came from here, etc' is fine. 'Product X costs $Y, get it from me here' is a problem.

Other than to respond to explicit sales pitches, this is the first real instance where I stepped up to moderate. The ideal is to have the forum as open as possible. The thread was initially not closed, although I thought the discussion was heading somewhere unpleasant. It wasn't until some members expressed their concerns, that the decision to do so came. I closed it because of the members, not my own whim. Since then I've received votes either way and will let everyone know once a decision is made to re-open the thread, or not.

Another point to consider in the closure of the said thread is that the discussion became one of morality and religion, and some here might feel uncomfortable with such references. I don't think anyone minds references to spirituality or religion in general, but to treat the forum like it's exclusive to a particular point of view with its own nomenclature might come across as inconsiderate to others.

Please feel free to contact me about anything. This is a community board. Until now no-one had anything to complain about, so I hope we can all just continue in the way we have so far.

So, we'll re-publish the Borneo Noir thread, after the majority of those who got back to me requested this. Others, who felt that the thread should remain suspended, were only concerned that we'd see a continuation of the somewhat heated debate. But I'm sure everyone would agree to continue the discussion civilly.

Thanks to all for their input in this matter, and optimism about the future of the forum.

Khao Yai First Batch from Ensar's Oud is here and have been tested. Light liquid in consistency with light teal color bordering on violet. when you pull the applicator it seems that the oil does not stick to the applicator but once in contact with your skin it spreads far beyond the little drop that was applied. Light menthol-y scent wafts away from the bottle neck as you pull the applicator away from the bottle. First notes that meet your nose are floral light notes, lilac like, in color it would almost be white or light purple/violet. There is little leftover fruitness like peaches and appricote but it is not a fruity Oud by any mean. It is the flowers that take center stage. The Oud's Thai Ancestry is very pronounced in it's mellow and sweet tendencies. There is absolutely no fecal/barnyard notes here that it almost fools one into thinking that this is not Oud. As a matter of fact I would liken this more to a complete and well composed perfume or a complete Olfactory experience where there are many floral notes all punched in a beautiful bouquet. This is a light hearten Oud oil that reminds me of Garden scenes from the play "Midnight summer dreams in the Garden of Good and Evil". It's happy, it's whimsical. The silage is mid range to weak (it does not project far beyond few feet from the body) which makes it suitable for those social evenings where you know you'll be in close contact with people. The dry down reminds you of the top shelf of Japanese Incense sticks that contains a good dosage of Kyara. I have to congratulate Ensar and his distillation team for they seem to have perfected that Kinam note (at least from the Thai/Cambodi oud stocks they've been distilling recently).
There has been discussions lately about cultivated Oud vs. Wild harvested and about Cultivated being of lesser quality than Wild. Ensar has speculated that this Khao Yai did not fair as well as the Encens oils because some people might have inferred that the addition of the Cultivated stock to the wild one has diminished it's quality. Well, I am here to refute this notion with this Khao Yai. This oil is so good that if you were to tell me that it is from the moon it would not have mattered for the scent speaks for itself and if one can not recognize greatness in this then Alas there is no hope. Prize (The big elephant in the room so to speak) could be another factor for one might think that for the same cost you could also get 3 great oils and while that might be true but those oils are in a different caliber altogether. It's like you can get to your destination using a Toyota or a Rolls Royce; you'll get there however the experience is totally different. Guess which one is the Rolls Royce? How will this oil age? will the floral notes diminish or would they become concentrated? would the silage intensifies or remain? all questions remain to be seen and smelled. Likability scale 9.5/10. (Highly recommended).
