This morning was Malay Encens from HOM. There have been comments about similarities between this oil and TW95. I can see where that is coming from. Both oils share a similar musky, oudy characteristic. This is a scent profile which can be a bit challenging to the newer enthusiast but eventually becomes a beloved one, at least in my personal experience.
Apart from the similarities I mentioned, the 2 oils are quite different, reflective of their price points. The TW95 is more complex, incensy, musky, balanced and clearly from higher quality wood. Its like the M.E. turned up several notches in every category. It is a benchmark Malaysian oud for its price point. Having said that, I take nothing away from the Malay Encens. It delivers a very satisfying oud experience, despite being somewhat more harsh. And for this morning's sweaty high heat round of golf, it was a guilt free big swipe wear, knowing I was saving the 'good stuff'.
Given the justifiably high cost of top quality ouds, it is nice to have a cheaper alternative when critical, introspective sniffing is not really possible, but you want to wear something (I guess I am addicted, LOL).
