Ah my friend, you flatter me, but I am most assuredly no expert. I'm an early learner much as yourself. You do have a lovely collection. Borneo 3000 clearly one of a kind, I suspect Asam Kinam is as well, but don't have that one myself. A couple of bottles of Tigerwood 95 and Aroha Kyaku (I really should get this one), great idea, given the value of those oils. Borneo Zen is lovely, I only have a sample but it's beautiful.

You've really got most area covered it looks between bottles and samples. How do you like the King Kong Koh? Have you tried Koh Kong 76? I have the 1976 and it's awesome. Also have KKK and Kambodi X.

How about the Hainan 05? One of my favorites and like it the most of my Chinese ouds, though don't have Chinese Exclusive. How do they compare?

At some point it's definitely worth trying out a Sultan or two. They have a very unique scent profile, at least the ones I've tried.

Great collections you and kesiro have going! It's fun fine tuning, exploring and watching tastes evolve.

@bhanny: Hainan 2005 and Chinese Exclusive share some notes. But the Hainan is a much stronger beast! Never before have I experienced so much that the amount you apply can so drastically change how you perceive an oil.

Apply a tiny amount of the Hainan, and you will be rewarded with a delicious potpurri of classic chinese agarwood notes, a slight bitterness, orange zest, musk.
It has on me an effect that I have only experienced in this oil: for want of a better word, this oil is "spacious". It exposes an airyness that makes me think of vapored camphor, icy mountain caps, open fields where a autumnal wind breezes and plays with the falling leaves. It gives you a feeling of openness, of being in Nature where no walls can constrict your sight.
It gives you a feeling of space around you. In addition to this it has a slight barnyard note, much less than the Chinese Exclusive, and half an hour later develops an almost aldehydic note that makes you think you just applied a fine designer perfume.
Chinese Exclusive on the other hand, had these notes that I associate with Water. Hainan is about Air and Space. That´s the main difference. And the CE is mellower - at least to my nose.

Apply a generous swipe, and you will have to endure an hour of strong barnyard and a stenchy note of serpentine leather that makes it impossible to detect the subtler layers of this scent unless it had enough time to evaporate a bit. So be very careful - the dose makes the poison here!

Haian 2005 is, as you have already guessed, the one oud that I have a love-hate-relationship with ;-P

@ThomasS - Thank you so much. Incredibly lovely and accurate description. I had never truly thought of it like this, but found this particularly true in my mind, nearly every word:

Luckily I have yet to oversiwpe :)

Interesting the water vs air/space comparison. I definitely see Hainan05 as the air/space type. Have you experience with Royal Kinam? If so, how does it compare?

Thank you again for your input here, greatly appreciated.

Kool, my brother, I hope your flattery was sarcasm because it is completely undeserved. I am the grasshopper compared to everybody on here, lol. I am very happy to be here amongst you all, mostly to learn. I might have a thing or two to share every once in a while, sure, but I mostly I am here to get educated.

Today I am using the beautiful aroha kyaku. Wow on the incense. Last night I had a childhood friend come over my place and we burned some top notch Asaam wood. He brought it with him. My whole house smelled up and then I put this oud on as well. Just perfect!

Hi bhanny, Thanks for the compliment!
Unfortunately I don´t have experience with Royal Kinam. I wish I had. AFAIK it is sold out long since (being a 2007 distillation, now filed under Legends at EO).
Allow me one question: you mentioned Kinam Emerald - what is it like? Are there other unreleased ils you would recommend?
If you wish you can PM me here. Thanks in advance!

Scent of Yesterday..didnt have time to post

I paid Taha a visit..Was I shocked to see him with a makeshift walking stick waiting for me! Thanks for having me Taha.May you be rewarded for your good deeds.

I'll try and describe the oils the best I can...though it won't be enough to do them justice due to my inexperienced nose..and it wasnt in the best of conditions yesterday...but here goes

1. Chamkeila (to be released) & Shano shokat..Taha's latest hindi Ouds..dark, black oils (not sparkly golden, green etc..Don't see any marketing trick here).

They are definitely from the same family. Barn-less hindi. Why do I put them together? Because I can't dissect the differences with great accuracy. Chamkeila, reminded me of patchouli. Deep, earthy sweetness. Some would say musky, and even Taha said that..not that far off due to the chemical compound in it (was it irone you mentioned Taha?).. Shano for me had the similar grounding, earthy body but presented in a different way..

2. An unreleased hindi. Currently nameless. I dont think it'll ever be released on the website. Barnless too. I get the same core structure as the other hindis..Finally I got to know how high quality barnless hindis should smell like. More information to key in my scent memory library. Very educational session on hindis..

3. A nameless, unreleased Koh Kong . Surplus from a custom order distillation if I'm not mistaken. Definitely a true blue cambodi. Sweet, smooth, some terpenic hints of incense notes, without any off notes. Super friendly oud for the uninitiated and western noses in general. A really good oil.

4. Unreleased maroke oil. Ethereal.clean. airy. Ample woodiness. Kind of clears your mind albeit I think. No burnt plastic/rubber notes. Nicely done. One of my favourite types of Oud..not too far from Malaysian thematically..perhaps due to my nationality bias :p

Here comes the scent bombs.. aquilaria sinensis oils..strangest ouds I've experienced so far.

5. To be released Lao (1) oil..opens up with ample amounts of terpenic molecules, with some sweet dried fruits tagging along..then it exudes slight bitter and woody notes..maybe this is the medicinal notes famed in sinensis? Then it turns sort of hindi final stage dry down notes..then it ends as something else. Very difficult for me to put my finger on it! The sweetness remains until near the end though, but in decreasing intensity.

6. To be released Lao (2)...the big brother of the two..in the sense of intensity! The most terpenic, woody opening oil I've smelled...ever. no fruits. Woody.bitter notes...morphing into something else now and then..Hard to explain its complexity..sorry guys (and Taha)

Aaaand....I think I short circuited my sense of smell..haha. of course I didnt return empty handed..had a dab of one of the oils yesterday..could barely smell it without deliberately putting my nose at my wrist..but when I asked a friend about it, he said he could smell the oud right when I stepped into his car. Sort of frustrating I cant appreciate the oils at its maximum potential..atleast I now know how getting serious olfactory fatigue feels like...

Gotta take a break from oud for a while I guess :/ sorry if I missed anything Taha! Too many to remember every tiny detail. Definitely not doing much justice for your oils. Need more practise and training.

Oh..about the "little vial" in Taha's latest post about Assam..Saw it..had a whiff..no barn. Not pitch black. Clean..also tried a laosi oil by the same distiller of the two bombs, but with his own techniques and specifications..very different..opens up abit dirty..and bitter..then super sour..unpleasant to my nose (Taha, your description of it as old socks might be what I'm detecting here)..then almost hindi barn-ish..then back to bitter..not as good but still very complex..maybe it's just not my taste?

Aand maybe some other stuff but lets end it here.

m.arif- thank you for that write-up! Sounds like a great experience. I feel bad about Taha's back issues. I will need to reach out to him as I am a spine doctor, lol.
Anyway, your description of the unreleased Lao oils really peaks my interest!!

Anyhow, my SOTD is Aroha Kyaku. What can I say that has not already been said? Just a fantastic Oud.

Please do! If it gets worse..wow.big changes may happen. Definitely a great experience. If you are coming around SEA you might want to make a short detour to Taha's place :)

Not a problem at all. Kynam Emerald is a Malysian distillation from 2007 I believe. It is crystal clear seawater with beautiful green kinam. Of my oils its closest to Port Moresby, but Moresby is more jungly green, this one reminds me of the sea a bit more. It's very smooth.

Others I love, you'd have to check with Ensar for availability would be Kambodi 1976, Borneo Diesel, Sultan Abdul Hamit, Sultan Mustafa (one of the most beautiful things I've ever smelled), Sultan Beyazit and Sultan Suleyman.

Any one of those I would give my highest recommendations. All amazing and unique.

Oh congratulations. What did you order if you don't mind me asking?
Sure! I had a bottle of Kynam No 1 on hold as I was gocan by to add more to that order and wanted to save on shipping. I added a bottle of Tigerwood 1995, sample of Oud Ahmad, and a sample of Xiang Liao Ling. Of course, the day Adam shipped it out, Thomas sent out the email with Tigerwood Royale. Royale is seriously a no brainer. I seriously have yet to be disappointed with anything that I've bought from Ensar and since I'm not into a single source of Oud (for example Vietnamese) I'm confident that anything I buy will be of the best quality. Ensars oils have real soul to them.

Amen to that! I have the exact same feeling. Ensar's oud have never disappointed. Like you said real heart and soul in them!
