Let's talk Oud: a detailed discourse on the various aspects of this substance we love

once I tried oud Sultani I had to say only few words…

among them were “ this is indeed the cheapest oud offered by Ensar “
sadly, some took it as a joke perhaps and still can’t get it…

@Taha, what do you think of that?

@Luigi could be the distiller-in-chief....

@JK does all the paperwork – GCMS, CITES, import and export red tape, you name it....

And you (@Adam) can sleep with the pot and condensers....

While I admire the charms of @5MeO's sister (oils delivered) and she turns out to be one of the houris....

And we all enjoy the tunes of @Joyoud's parrot's take on "Ode to Joy" together....

I almost forgot to add that @Oud_Learner can be in charge of the V-vials, pipettors and cryogenic labels
oh… thats too exiting…
the long queue of woods to be cooked in my kitchen is near to an end…
so I will be free to sleep with/next to any new brew you guys have in mind…

@ Ensar, Taha, Kruger… what are your thoughts ?
@ everyone …?

personally I think that's an exciting idea and that in very very few other environments, if any at all, has ever been seen such a proposal from the producers (here -you distillers-) and the end users/customers. I love how close this connection is in the world of oud, and in this forum expecially.

yeh… thats quite soul tingling… haha… not sure if thats the right word… please forgive my poor english…

at the end of the day there are artists and those who appreciate the art…

just as there is a fine oud oil and a nose that passes precious molecules to ones soul…
with out a nose even the most amazing oud oil won’t be appreciated… it probably end up waisted…
and of course a nose/soul may miss quite a lot if there is no fine artisanal oud oils around =))))

Well, now this is starting to get exciting.... What started off as a joke seems to have really piqued people's interests. We have at least two distillers who're down for releasing Gaharu-exclusive oils, and two oud lovers who approve of the idea....

I'm afraid with only two votes, we wouldn't be able to realistically move entire batches via Gaharu though.... If we can see a real show of hands as to who would be interested to buy exclusive artisanal releases via Gaharu – at a discount! – we might take the concept to the next stage and start discussing details....

@Adam, I'm sorry to hear you're almost out of wood! Have you got anything lined up for upcoming distillations? If not, I might supply you with enough wood to cook the very first Feel Oud Gaharu oil, and we can agree on the parameters in KL, if you're game. We might even take a vote here, and let people decide what kind of profile they'd like to smell! Only thing is, I don't know how much wood you'd need to do one batch. What is the size of your pot? If it's small enough to fit in your bed, I'm assuming it shouldn't be too huge! :p

Sounds too good…
Lets see if I am back to Sabah after good time in Kuala Lumpur… God willing…
I may again go Thailand for a short visit as there are quite a few interesting project on the horizon… however, I am not quite sure as I really start to see a huge decline in demand for a good farmed oud… will see…

As for the pots… We got plenty… thank God… can change them every night so I don’t feel bored… Pyrex glass for 2kg of naked ultra high grade woods…
Portugese copper for 3 - 3.5kg. New born stainless baby with amazing old school long neck stainless steel condenser done ala terminator2 style =) The pictures of that one are coming soon… My huge hybrid boiler from Thailand for 15-20 kg... and one of my best friends here got couple of boilers that I got him in Thailand… retro copper around 15 years old... and heavily used full stainless set up…

I feel Taha's comparison to Starry Night painting is very relevant to this topic.

A porsche panamera for $10000? Still pretty darn expensive for a tool to get you from point A to B. But it would be the cheapest porsche to date!

The special Gaharu edition oil is a great idea. Thumbs up to this suggestion !

Well, I just had an idea too...
I'm flying out to Malaysian Borneo on Tuesday, and if all goes well (I hope!) there should be plenty of high grade wood to cook. My hunters don't even bother to cut down current-generation trees, they only go for mother and grandmother-generation trees hence all the fai... err, 'futile' hunts (thanks for the correction @Kruger!) in the past 12 months, here in peninsular Malaysia.
Borneo is almost dry too by the way. Don't believe me? Check out Google Maps (zoom in, and all you see is logging tracks, our worst nightmare for gaharu hunting purposes).
But we may have finally opened up the VERY last virgin jungle left in Borneo (again, don't believe me? Ask m.arif.. I showed him when he was at my place last week).

So how about we all get together, and send some awesome prayers, well wishes and positive vibes my way, eh? ;)
I'd be happy to donate some of that wood for this project. It would be an A-Z experience. I'll try to get photos, videos and so on (the locals there walk around in the nude though, so I don't know how successful I'd be in capturing PG-13 photos and videos of the locals).

So.. I donate the wood, Adam can do the cooking (logistically easiest this way), and Ensar could design the distillation?

PS: heading our team is a Dayak ex-commando. :D

Haha. Good one @Adam. I'm with you on the photos lol

@Taha It looked like the only untouched carpet of tree tops in the area. Plus, it's veeeeery small compared to Taman Negara in Pahang region. Yet the potential to get good wood is many times higher I bet! Just by looking at the logging trails, one can make a good guess.

I wont say where though. :)

Keep the good vibes coming everyone. :)

Living tree Maroke.... You must be dreaming!

How much can you pay per kilogram, max? I'll see what my Chinese contacts have available.

I do have some Maroke high grade dust, but I'd have to warn you it's extremely low yield! You'd be looking at $100 per kilogram for that. I doubt you'd get even a gram from a kilogram though....
